Random Act of Kindness

I didn’t know until this year that just like there is a day for everything, there is also a Random Act of Kindness Day, which was February 17. A friend of mine recently told me that, and this is how I found out. I have known this friend forever. This month she is turning 50 years old. Every year, we exchange gifts on our birthdays. But this year she didn’t want to do that. She has a different plan.
She said to me that, “As you know my birthday is in this month, but this year I don’t want you to buy anything for me”. I looked at her and asked, “Why not”? She said, “This is what I would like to do: I want to use my special day to make someone else’s day special. I have everything. So I don’t want you or anyone to buy any gifts or take me out; instead of that, the money that was going to be spend on me, I want to combine and give to someone who has a need”. When I heard her idea, of course I loved her more and love her idea. And that’s what I did for her.
She made me start thinking that it’s a great idea to do nice things for others on your birthday. But also we don’t have to wait until our birthdays to do a random act of kindness. We should at least try to do kind things every day or whenever we can. And it’s also not necessary to involve money.  There are so many ways to do kind things throughout the day and everyday.
A Random Act of Kindness is contagious like a smile. And it doesn’t take much affect to start, but it goes long way. I personally love the idea. We are around so many good people, and they are doing kind things to others everyday, but they don’t want to make a big deal about it, and that’s the real meaning and a beautiful thing about the kindness.
